' THE EXPLOIT OF PIONEER SCOUT ANDREW POE Andrew and Adam Poe, two brothers, broth-ers, were neon to In the pioneer day of Ohio, One day when the Poe brothers were leading a party on the trail of a band of Indians who had raided the settlements, they left their men to try to locate the savages. The brothers became separated. On the bank of a river Andrew came upon a giant Wyandot chief and a smaller Indian who were standing with their rifles cocked but looking In another direction. Poe'e rifle missed fire when be shot at the chief and the Indians at once discovered him. Before they could shoot, the scout sprang upon them, seizing both around the neck. The small Indian Jerked loose first and while the chief held Poe, his companion com-panion tried to get In a death blow with his tomahawk. Andrew allowed him to como close. Then with one mighty kick ho planted hlo foot In tbo Indian's stomach, 'hurling him backward back-ward and knocking the hatchet from his hand. When the little Indian got his breath back and recovered his tomahawk, ho advanced to the attack again and succeeded suc-ceeded In wounding Poo In the arm. A second later the scout pulled him-self him-self from the grasp of the chief, seized ono of the Indians' guns and shot tho warrior as he advanced to attack hlro a third time. Poe was no longer lighting light-ing against odds and ho Immediately attacked the chief. Tho ground was wet nnd slippery. In another moment the Indian and tho white man, locked In each other's nrms, fell Into the water nnd each began be-gan trying to drown the other. Finally Final-ly Poo seized his enemy by tho scalp lock and held his head under water until he believed tho chlof was dend. When he released his hold, however, the redskin renewed tho struggle. By this time they were lighting In deep water. Seemingly at tho samo tlmo both thought of the one loaded rifle on the shore and both started to swim to get It. Tho Ridlan was the better swimmer mid reached the bnnk first. As the chief picked up the gunt Poo turned back In the water nnd begun diving to nvold n bullet. Tbo chief, however, had picked up an empty gun, .(ho one with which Andrew had killed tho llttlo Indian, nnd before tho Wyandot Wyan-dot could get the loaded weapon, Adam Poe, who had heard tho shot, caino running ta his brother's rescue. He fired und tho Indian fell 'lead. |
