A year ago last winter a small slide from the . same hill did some damage to the works,- which were. 'then being operated by . the Quincy company. To guard 4- against a recurrence of the same thing the huge snow fences, which are shown about half-way up the hill, 4- were constructed. Ordinarily they would have been sufficient protection, but the unusually heavy fall of the 4. past ten days, on top of the several feet of old snow, which' had had time to settle and orm a good sliding sur- . 4" face for the new, evidently destroyed the usefulness of the fences.. At the extreme right of the picture are the . 4- main hoisting works and mill of the Daly-West company. They occupy an absolutely safe position. |
