Whelan Is Now Assistant f Priest at St. Leo's Church. j Francis Xavier Whelan was raised j to t lie dignity of the. holy priesthood at i St. Leo's church Thursday morning of Rev. F. X, Whelan last week. Rt. Rev. Bishop Matz officiated, of-ficiated, assisted by nearly every priest in the city. The ceremony took place at 7 o'clock, -but long before that time the church was filled to its utmost capacity. Father Fa-ther Francis' was archdeacon and the young priest was assisted by Rev. Fathers Fa-thers MoCabc, ... .O'Malley, White, Sehiinpf. S. J.. and Cantwell, C. SS. R. Father O'Ryan was master of ceremonies. cere-monies. The altar was'handsoniely decorated and the finest vestments worn. After the ceremony the priests took breakfast break-fast at the residence of Father O'Ryan, whose assistant - Father "VVhalen is to be. Father Whelan was born in Ireland twenty-si: years ago. He received his theological education at the Grand seminary in Montreal and later at the Baltimore college. He has two brothers, broth-ers, who are well known priests, one in Pennsylvania and one in Texas. On Sunday the newly ordained priest said his first Mass at St. Leo's at 10 o'clock, lie was assisted by Father O'Ryan. who preached the sermon. Mrs! Harry Preble presided at the organ and Miss Bertie Berlin was principal prin-cipal soloist. FORT COLLINS, COL. Mrs. James McCormick and little twin daughters. The great disaaster at the mine of the Cnion Coal & Coke company, at Bowen. last 'evening, 'even-ing, when thirteen men lost-their lives, continues to be the sole topic of conversation con-versation in Trinidad and all the adjacent ad-jacent coal Camps. . Early this morning morn-ing a large number of miners resumed work in an endeavor to reach the bodies bo-dies of the dead and imprisoned men. Before 8 o'clock this morning a large crowrd of people from Trinadad and the coal camps were at P.owen. all anxious anx-ious to see the mine where the great disaster occurred. Nearly all the men killed had relatives or friends residing in this section, and the, news of the terrible calamity has cast a gloom over the entire country here. PUEBLO, COLO. Mrs. M. R. McCulley of Vernon avenue ave-nue left for a visit of ten days , in Colorado Springs and Manitou. Miss Dittie Conway of Newton, Kan., who has been visiting Mis. M. A. Conuer. has gone to Denver for a short visit. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kelly and fam- j ily have returned from an outing in the mountains beyond La Veta. Miss Anna K. Conners and John W. j Cattanach were married last Wednesday Wednes-day week. ; Miss Kate Gogarty and Mjss E. F. Dunn have returned frum a visit to Colorado Springs and Manitou. Miss Grace and Mamie Elliott, who! were the guests of Mrs. Thomas B urke of Eaton avenue, have gone to Colorado Colo-rado Springs and Denver to visit friends before their return to Holiday, Kan. Sister M. Lavaille, who has been musical director of Loretto academy, this city, for many years, has been transferred to Loretto academy, Springfield. Mo., where she assuines the duty of Superior of the academy. Sister Lavaille, during her long period of labor in Pueblo, made many friends among the old and young that seriously seri-ously regret her removal. She is a fine musician and possesses the happy faculty fac-ulty of being able to impart to her pupils her knowledge of the divine art in a successful and pleasant manner. Her friends in Pueblo and the state wish that her new field of work will be pleasant and profitable. FLORENCE, COLO. P. T. MoGuire, representative to the thirteenth general assembly from this county, has announced his candidacy for the nomination of the Democratic party for state senator. He is one of the leading merchants here. |
