Show LET THEM ANSWER. This .week there came to us a set of circulars telling about "the greatest selling book of the twentieth century." cen-tury." Perhaps it is in certain quarters quar-ters and among a certain class of people. peo-ple. But as decency does not permit their mention in our colunms, readers must surmise where and who these are. Suffice it to say that" the work is another an-other of those scurrilous and sensa tional attacks upon the church and-1 its priests and religious orders. It is' called "The Devil in the Church." We have no desire to refute the attacks. at-tacks. Such a task would be useless, even for the benefit of intelligent non-Catholics. non-Catholics. But we have, again laid the matter before the proper authorities, authori-ties, as we did in a similar case about a year ago. The result of this action we shall make known at the proper time. There are one of two things, however, how-ever, to which we desire to call attention. atten-tion. One of these is a second circular circu-lar addressed to members of the Royal Arcanum. Now in this organization there are many Catholics, and it becomes be-comes them to speak out emphatically in response to this insult offered them by the "American Publishing company," compa-ny," which has issued the work. Let them answer the appeal therein made of their great interest in 'the work. As Catholics this is their plain duty. But we are further assured that the work has the endorsement of the Ancient An-cient Order of United Workmen, the Elks, the Grand Army of the Republic and the Royal Arcanum. We do not believe it. Yet blue lead pencil marks before these names on the circular so state. The public has no information on the contrary. Now, then, let us see. To our positive knowledge, in all these organizations named there are many persons professing themselves practical Catholics. If 'they arc let them prove it. Let them answer whether, wheth-er, or not their organization has taken such action. If it has, then they are cowardly to continue their affiliation. If it has not, then it becomes their duty to see that . such misrepresentation misrepresenta-tion is stopped. If it has not, they should see to It that their organisation organisa-tion make a public disavowal of the fact. If needs be, they should publicly resent the insult and take steps to punish pun-ish such unwarranted use of their name. But whatever other action may be taken In the premises, Catholics in the organizations named must in justice jus-tice to the same, as well as to their religious convictions, make answer to the accusation that they have endorsed this vile and filthy attack on their faith.
