Show Have You Observed It? OCTOBER, the month of the Rosary, is now in its third week. How many have availed themselves of the opportunity which Our Lady of Victory holds out to her children, through her powerful intercession? Not a very large number of men in this city have given evidence of their devotion. devo-tion. Is it through any ridiculous notion no-tion that beads were intended only for women and such things are against intellectual in-tellectual piety? Some people sneer at the practice of using beads, etc., as a "memoria tech-hica" tech-hica" in saying one's prayers; but the practice has existed long in, the church and we find it mentioned by a writer even in the fifth century. We may tak it for granted, then, that it is not without with-out good reason that the holy church so strongly recommends its use on all possible occasions, and especially this month, says a writer in the Pittsburg Observer. Toung men, as a rule, say they can find but little time for pious practices, what with their business occupation, and what with their evening engagements, engage-ments, or the wearied condition in which they find themselves at the close of the day. But here is a devotion devo-tion which by no manner of means interferes in-terferes with their daily avocations. Tou need not enter a church to say the Rosary or any part of it. It would be indeed wrong to utilize any part of your employer's time for this purpose; but there is plenty of other time during dur-ing the day which can be used. For instance, the journey in the morning to the city is not usually occupied with conversation. Here is one opportunity op-portunity of saying the beads or a certain cer-tain proportion fixed on. You are not required to ostentatiously display your beads, and the devotion may be employed em-ployed sitting, standing in company or alone. What is recommended, then, is this. Resolve from this day to the end of the month to say some portion of the Rosary, one decade, two decades, or as your devotion leads you to determine. deter-mine. But do. not throughout the re-mainder re-mainder of the month on any occasion allow yourself to neglect the obligation you lay upon yourself. It is so absurdly absurd-ly easy, apparently, to say one decade a day, and surely not much harder to say five. But stick to it with determination deter-mination for the two weeks of October left, at least. In the street car or walking home, or during the few spare moments after meals there's your chance. Just think about thia and start in today. Remember that In the various mysteries we find most powerful motives mo-tives for the practice of the virtues corresponding cor-responding to them, and appeal to heaven for all our wants and necessities, necessi-ties, and there is little doubt that we shall receive copious blessings from the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation. It is certainly worth trying, try-ing, and surely there is nothing to be ashamed of in it. |
