I Chief Joseph, at the head of the Nez Perces Indians, took to the war path and fought one of the most desperate battles in the history of frontier warfare war-fare . When the news of this uprising in their neighborhood reached tne ranch, Mr. Browne urged hi3 wife to go with her children to some place of greater safety. She asked if there was any danger. Not wishing to alarm her unduly, he said he thought there was no serious risk, but wished her to do as he suggested as a matter of extra precaution. With characteristic de-votedness de-votedness she replied: "What is safe for you is cafe for me" and she remained re-mained to share the dangers with those she loved. Mrs. Browne's family was her pride and jo y,and she was the mother of four children, three of whom are living. liv-ing. A son, Frank, met a violent death in the hoist of a mine in Butte two years ago. He was visiting a friend, and while he was looking at the machinery in action he was caught in a belt and hurled to, his death. He was buried in the Catholic cemeter, there, and his mother's body was laid at rest by his side. The surviving members of the family fam-ily are J. A. Browne, Jr., son, and Mrs. Frank J. Hagenbarth of Salt Lake and Miss Fannie Browne. Mrs. Hagenbarth was unable to go to Butte on account of illness. Her husband accompanied Mr. Browne from Salt Lake and Joseph, Jr., and Miss Fannie went down to Butte from their home. Mr. Browne 'has the sympathy of a great many friends in Montana. L where he has lived since the early '60s. He has represented Beaverhead . county In the legislature of the state and is one of the well known citizens . and politicians. Mrs. Browne's dying request was that there be no flowers at her funeral. o Mr. McGrane, business manager of last year's pilgrimage to Rome, etc., is preparing to take another party this year, leaving July 7.
