Show IRELAND SPEAKS IN ROME AMERICAN ARCHBISHOP MAKES I PLEASING ADDRESS. I j Declares That Catholics In This Country Coun-try Are Faithful to the Roman Church and the H0I7 See. Rome, Aug. 19. Today being the feast of St. Joachim, the pope's patron saint, there was a large gathering at the Vatican of cardinals, bishops and presidents of societies. The pope, who 1 was in excellent health and spirits, spoke at some length regarding matters mat-ters of Catholic interest, and then, with a complimentary introduction, invited ? Archbishop Ireland to address the assembly as-sembly on matters in America and the relations of the outer world to the holy see. Archbishop Ireland," who "was frequently fre-quently applauded during a speech of I twenty minutes, spoke Eowingly.or the fidelity of American Catholics to the Roman church and the holy see. He described liberty under the Ameri- can flag, and set forth the necessity of the pope as the heiil of Christendom Christen-dom being free and independent to anyone any-one civil power, "so as to be. in fact. I a3 well as of right, the sovereign teacher teach-er and ruler of all nations and peoples, without dependency on any special nation na-tion or people." The address gave visible satisfaction. Monseigneur Ireland had a final audi- ! ence with the pope on Saturday. He will leave Rome this evening. 1 |
