It is to be hoped that tho famous work will have si great circulation now j that it has appeared at popular prie-e. It ranks with the "Confessions" of St. Augustine as a n- ; ligious autobiography, and it. will always remain a-i j a masterpiece of the English language. It is the j reply of Cardinal Newman to the erratic Dr. King5- ; leywho accused him of bad faith. The cardinal knew that he was regarded with suspicion by many -of his countrymen after his conversion and he felt-that felt-that the only way to remove that suspicion and " to repudiate the charges of Dr. Kingsley was by telling in plain language the entire story of his religious re-ligious opinions and his struggle for truth. And when the story appeared in installments, it was ' more generally read than any book of the day. ; Once for all the famous convert dissipated the mi-t of suspicion which hung over him.
