His friends are sorrowed sor-rowed at his passing. Pioneer of Montana, Mon-tana, associated with the early history of the west, merchant and man of af- j fairs, a partner in business with John j Copliens and later with Marcus Daly, j a man who aided in the upbuilding of Catholicity In the state James Shields was loved by all who knew him. The funeral took place on Monday. The funeral services in Anaconda were attended by the many who had known and respected the deceased in life. ' j Sunday and Monday the body, enclosed en-closed in a handsome casket, was viewed at the Evans residence by old friends. Several beautiful floral pieces from friends here and in Butte lay beside be-side the bier. Shortly after 10 o'clock Monday morning the body was taken from the residence to St. Paul's Catholic Cath-olic church. The pallbearers were P. J. Brophy. John O'Rourke, Mayor J. H. McCarthy, Stato Senator Thomas Courtney and Captain John McCormack of Butte, and Dr. N. S. Snyder, Colonel T. O'Leary, William Gwinn, L. G. .' Smith and City Clerk Joseph Peters of Anaconda. At the church solemn Requiem High Mass was sung. The services were con- ducted by Rev. Father Follet, assisted ' by Fathers Callahan and Harrington : I of Butte. The servirpq wptv vpht im. I pressive and the church was crowded with sorrowing and sympathizing friends. Father Follet made a few remarks, re-marks, in which he referred to the uo-right uo-right character and many- qualities possessed by the deceased. By request the choir from St. Peter's Catholic church was in attendance ana sang the Mass. The choir included Mrs. Frank Collins, Mrs. Dezell, Mrs. J. F. Spelman, Miss Wricke, Miss Daly, Miss Gleeson, Dr. J. F. Spelman and Messrs. Hoff and Davis. I After services at the church the cas- i Ket was taken to the B., A. & P. depot and placed aboard the special funeral train to be taken to Butte. Six coaches were provided for those who desired to attend. Many old friends, not only from Anaconda, but from various por-! por-! tions of the state, accompanied the i body to Butte. The train left here at ll:55, and the run to Butte was made in an hour. At the B., A. & P. depot In Butte there was a large concourse of friends in carriages to attend the remains to their last resting place in the Catholic cemetery. Carriages had also been provided for the party from Anaconda. At l o'clock the funeral cortege left the B., A. & P. depot, Butte, and proceeded pro-ceeded direct to St. Patrick's cemetery, where, in accordance with the cabled request of Mrs. Shields from Paris, the body was interred in the family burying bury-ing ground beside the four children of Mr. and Mrs. Shields. The services at the grave were conducted by Rev. Fathers Callahan and Harrington of Butte, and were short and simple, according ac-cording to the rites of the Catholic church. The special funeral train returned to Anaconda shortly after 3 p. m. |
