(A brief mention was made In the last number of the Intermountain Catholic of the blessing of the St. Lawrence church bell at Walkerville, but this j especially graceful account, we feel, j will be read with interest by all our Montana readers. Ed.) High up above the smoke of the smelters in the valley and surrounding one of the highest hills on which this sreat mlnfnf rnmn ia Viuilt otanla tha church of St. Lawrence O'Toole. Out of its tower last Sunday morning the I clear tones of the largest bell in Montana Mon-tana resounded a1 over Butte. Most people hearkened to the sound from the hill in wonder and admiration before be-fore comprehending that the harmony proceeded from the church in Walkerville. Walker-ville. The bell arrived two weeks ago from '. the foundry of Henry McShane at Baltimore. Bal-timore. Together with its mountings, it weighs 2,000 pounds. - The composition composi-tion is mainly Lake Superior copper, eight inched in thickness, and it cost $365. Wednesday morning week a represen- j tative gathering of Catholics from all over Butte attended the solemn blessing bless-ing of the bell. Father Day of Helena performed the function, as sub-dele--gate of his Lordship. Bishop Brondel. He was assisted by the clergy of Butte and visiting priests. Gathered in the sanctuary, also, as sponsors of the bell. were John Murray, mayor of Walkerville; Walker-ville; J. H. McCarthy, mayor of Butte, and wife: Patrick Regan, sheriff of Silver Sil-ver Bow county, and wife; Mrs. Joseph Laird, Mr. and Mrs. James Higgins, Richard Dwyer, John Murray, Richard Rich-ard Dwyer, Mrs. John Leary, John Ro-nan, Ro-nan, Mr. and Mrs. Grant. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nevins, Mr. and Mrs. John O'Rourke, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cassi-dy, Cassi-dy, Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Donnell, James Burke and Miss Burke. Mrs. John Quilty. Mrs. Mollie Withers. After the ceremony concluded, solemn high mass was celebrated by Father Batens, pastor, assisted by Father Callahan Cal-lahan of Butte as deacon; Father Cocjp-man Cocjp-man of Anaconda, sub-deacon: Father Day of Helena, assistant priest. In the sanctuary were Fathers O'Brien of Livingston, Quesnell of Frenchtown, Gallagher of Kalispel and Artz of St. Peters' mission. Fathers English, Harrington, Har-rington, Cassidy and Blaire of Butte. In preparation of the event Miss Kate Ronan. leader of the choir, and her trained singers rendered the Easter music most effectively. The sprmnn . V. irn i. A L. I O'Brien of Livingston brought out a good many points new to our conception concep-tion of the uses of the bell, which we ! thought were wholly comprehended in Edgar Allen Poe's rairsing noem of "The Bells." After explaining the incidents in-cidents in the ceremony Father O'Brien gave an interesting allegorical description descrip-tion to fit the mind of the Catholic. Kis effort in a pathetic manner to associate I the tolling of the funeral bell with the loss of loved ones, brought out the forensic qualities of the youngest of our Montana priests, and stamps him as one possessing the true instincts of pulpit oratory. |
