Show HOMEWARD BOUND Catholic Doctrines Adopted in England The Mass No Longer Idolatrous. A correspondent sends to the Glasgow Observer some remarkable extracts from the Church Times, one of the best known and most influential Protestant Protes-tant church papers in Great Britain, which has among its contributors such Protestant church dignitaries dig-nitaries as the Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury Canter-bury and York and the Protestant Bishops of London Lon-don and Birmingham. In that paper some weeks ago appeared an advertisement ad-vertisement from the Protestant parson of Storn-oway, Storn-oway, asking if any of its readers would subscribe "for a sanctuary lamp to burn before' the Blessed Sacrament in the most isolated parish in Britain, or who would give the Stations of the Cross" to be put up in the church. The jOhurch Times of April 3 last contained four advertisements in which the word "Mass" occurs. oc-curs. I copy one (continues the correspondent) worded as follows, the others are similarly worded: "Priest Wanted in Northern Town. Six Points. Daily Mass. Apply ." The six points are six well known Catholic usages such as unleavened bread, mixing water with chalice, lights, etc. Here is another sample: "Community of St. Katherine's, Normand House. Normand Road, London. Retreat will be given by Father Black on -. Apply Rev. Mother.", Last week the same paper has also four advertisements advertise-ments for assistant ministers where "Daily Mass" is mentioned. Here is a specimen of an advertisement, advertise-ment, typical of most of the advertisements under the heading "Clerical," appearing week after week in the same newspaper: "Priest Wanted. Catholic. Daily Eucharist. Apply ." Other two advertisements, also in the Church Times, are worded thus: "St. Savior's, Poplar. Se-enth year's mind of Father Dolling. Friday, 14th of May, 8:30 p. m. Vespers of the Dead and Sermon. Saturday, loth of May, 7 a. m. Sung Mass of Requiem." "Saturday, May 15th, seventh anniversary of the death of Father Dolling A Requiem Re-quiem will be sung at St. Cuthbert's, Earl's Court," etc. In the same paper I read that "the dedication anniversary" the 100th of the first abbey church "by St. Wilfrid, Bishop of York, was held at Evesham Eves-ham in All Saints church by a Missa Cantata celebrated cel-ebrated by the Vicar on 1st May. On Sunday the Abbot of Caldey preached three times in All Saints. At the afternoon service, the Mayor and corporation corpora-tion attended in .,ite. The Abbot of Caldey gave a powerful address on 'Character.' There were crowded congregations at all the services. The Abbot Ab-bot of Caldey gave a beautiful address on 'Perfection,' 'Perfec-tion,' illustrating his remarks by reference to the Benedictine Order, now so happily revived in England." Eng-land." All this as Protestant advertising and Protestant Protest-ant church news is surely significant of something more. What is it ? Will those people stop at their "Mass" and go no further? We hope not. There shall be one fold and one shepherd. |
