Show SCHOOL YEAR. Our schools will commence their school year next week. The Catholic schools in the diocese of ' Salt Lake are as well equipped as any in the state to impart a good sound education. There is no reason why every Catholic child, in these parishes which have Catholic schools, should not attend those schools. There are many reasons why they should. Catholic schools are provided for the benefit ben-efit of Catholic parents to help them in imparting a good religious training to their children, a work in which parents themselves seldom engage. In this age of materialism and unbelief what could be more essential than to comply with the injunction of St. Paul by being sufficiently instructed to ac-couui ac-couui for the faith one" professes. But how account ac-count for it unless the child is daily instructed in his faith. Irreligion leads to crime. In France, once so Catholic, the prohibition of religious teaching in the schools is producing a crop of murderers. The following dispatch proves this: Paris, Aug. 15. In his speech in the chamber in favor of the abolition of the deatlTpenalty, M. Joseph Pieinach frankly admitted the increase in criminality in France, but attributed it to drink. The Gaulois answers his argument by pointing out that in England, where there is more drunkenness drunken-ness than in France, the number of assassins is nevertheless fewer. "Without doubt," adds the Gaulois, "we hold at this moment the record of crime in Europe, and we have earned unenviable superiority since the abolition of "religious teaching in our schools." Parents, when too late, realize the evil effects of their neglect in the proper training of their offspring. off-spring. The richest inheritance a parent can leave their children is the faith of their forefathers without which it is impossible to please God. When that is lost or endangered, on the parents rests the terrible responsibility. Xo worldly honors or riches can compensate for that loss. "What doth it profit a man to gain the whole world, if in the end he lose his immortal soul." |
