Show PRIESTS HEROIC ACT. A priest, who refused to give his name, was the central figure in a thrilling thrill-ing act of heroism at Caseyville, 111., on Saturday last, when he crawled on his hands and knees through blazing wreckage, to administer the last Sacraments Sacra-ments to Li B. List, a fireman, who was being slowly roasted to death beneath be-neath the firebox of his engine. List was pinioned under his engine when B. & O. passenger train No. 5 crashed into train No. 6. Although every ev-ery effort was made to rescue him, he died before the heavy machinery that held him down could Be removed. The priest was a passenger on the train, and when he learned the fate of the fireman, he threw off his coat and searched for some place where he might crawl through the tangled mass of machinery to the side of the dying man. Although the woodwork of the locomotive was ablaze, the priest did not hesitate. Covering his mouth and nose with a handkerchief he crept into the inferni. List was begging piteous-ly piteous-ly for aid. The priest found that it would be impossible im-possible for help to' come in time and remained until the end had come. When he emerged his hair and eyebrows were singed and his clothing was literally scorched to rags.' He declined to give his name. List was married and his ' last coherent words was a request that the awful story of his death be kept from his wife. |
