Show EDUCATION IN MANILA. St. Joseph's College Founded in 1595, Before Harvard or Yale. - A recent writer to the Outlook, Mr. W. A. Chester, speaks at length of the ! long prominence of the Jesuits in edu- j cational work In the Philippines. Among other things he says: j "It may surprise some of our read- j ers to learn that a college was founded in Manila before Harvard or Yale j earlier, indeed, than the common school j of Xew England. St. Joseph's College j was established in 1595 and graduated its first class in 1601. Prior to 1.6S it was in charge and under the control of the Jesuits, who were made trustees of j the institution by its donors at the time of its creation. When the Jesuits were expelled from Spain and its colonies, col-onies, the governor general declared the property of the college forfeited, and converted the buildings into barracks for his soldiers. An appeal being taken to the crown, the action of the governor gov-ernor general was reversed and the" college placed under control of the Metropolitan Met-ropolitan Church of Manila," |
