A brilliant spectacle that greatly impressed im-pressed the thousands of worshippers f at Sacred Heart church Sunday evening even-ing was the full illumination of the edifice ed-ifice by the many hundreds of eie:-fio lights in the ceiling and walls of that church. It was the second illumination of the character in the history' of the specious and beautiful new house worship. The purewhite interior with its dull dazzling display of lights was) a. peculiarly splendid and appropriate ' Easter occurrence. The first full 1!-1 lumination was on. last Christmas. The illumination followed a powerful sermon by the Reverend Father M. J. ! Marsile of Chicago. The father is a man of heroic figure and commanding appearance, which added to his elo-1 quence and piety causes him to bo. gr?atly revered by the Catholic people-wherever people-wherever he goes. The French mission mis-sion which he conducted last week was remarkably successful, the good that attended his efforts being fully equal to that of the noted visit of the. father to Butte four years ago. His sermon in English during the concluding services serv-ices of Holy Week and Sunday were listened to by immense, congregations inai ncie greauy earned. The masses at Sacred Heart church Sunday morning were attended by great crowds of ' worshippers. In the evening there .were solemn vespers, solemn benediction" and the grand illumination of the church with its 1.700 electric lights. Besides the candles can-dles on all the altars were lit, making the whole church one blaze of glory for the closing of the glad Eastertide. Altar boys to the number of forty-eight forty-eight in white vestments added to the beauty of the scene. .Father Callahan, the pa?tor cf the church, was the celebrant at the solemn sol-emn high mass at 11 o'clock. The floral decorations were among the most profuse pro-fuse and beautiful ever seen in a church in Butte on a similar ' occa- .-1011. a special ieature ot the services serv-ices that greatly delighted the people was the music under the direction of the choir leader, Mrs. Jack Thomas. It was remarkably fine throughout. All the masses and other services at ! St. Patrick"? church were attended by trreat throngs of worshippers Sunday. The Easter floral decorations were magnificent. The altars were a mass of roses, carnations, St. Joseph's lilies and other beautiful flowers and greenery. green-ery. This is the first Easter since the handsome onyx and bras? altad rail was placed in the church, and it added greatly to the effectiveness of the decorations dec-orations on this glad occasion. At the solemn high mass at 11 o'clock Father De Siere was celebrant, with Father Harrlne-tnn onH PoOi r I Glynn assisting. There were fifty-eight acolytes in attendance. A fine sermon, appropriate to the Easter occasion and exemplifying the lesson of the day, was delivered by Rev. Father Murphy of Salt Lake- In the evening were solemn vespers. The music of the day was up to the hight standard of that furnished by the choir under the direction of the organ-I organ-I ist and choir leader. Mrs. Rooney. A- Mrs. E. S. McRoberts. who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. VT. Kemper of West Broadway, has returned to her home in Knappton, Wash. f Mrs. D. J. Meagher of Helena is spending a few days with her sister, Mrs. W. E. Knuth. on rt sn,- street. Mrs. Meagher has ju?t returned from Chicago, where she was called by a telegram announcing the severe illness ill-ness and death of her "mother, Mrs Catherine Ryan. !'' The church was favored at this mass with the attendance at-tendance of the fine choir of Sacred Heart church. It was presented to the church by . a wealthy member of the parish. Father Baten? was celebrant, cele-brant, assisted by Rev. Father Ryan and Iev. Father Moskopp. The latter is a visiting clergyman from Spokane He is a learned speaker and a professor at. Gonzaga college. He delivered an able sermon peculiarly appropriate to the joyous Easter occasion. The music was, under the direction of Miss Vali. Ronan, the choir leader and organist -j r Rev. McKinnon entertained the Saint Anthony society Tuesday afternoon. I Rev. J. B. Thompson held Easter services ser-vices Sunday morning, at St. John"? church in the valley. Saint Catherine's choir of Boulder assisted the valley choir. The church was elaborately decorated. I Superintendent T. S. MeAloney, of the state school here, went to Great Fall? the first of the week to look up some deaf and blind children who were being kept out of school by their oa rents, the names being furnished by the county superintendent of school?, in accordance w.'th a law parsed by the last legislature. BIG TIMBER, MOJM1. Daniel Hogan. a former resident of this section, returned Saturday morning morn-ing from Alaska, where he has spent several seasons in pursuit of the clu-I clu-I sive yellow dust. Mr. Hogan was I formerly engaged in ranching Just e-ast I of Big Timber.' but finding life rather ! .' low, he disposed of his property and departed for South Africa, this was several years ago. While in the country of the Boers Mr. Hogan met with many adventures, adven-tures, but did not find the coveted wealth, and finally returning to Amer- j ica he decided to cast his lot in Alaska, j where he met with better success, hav- I ing brought a considerable amount of dust to- Seattle on one of the last steamers to come front the north last fall.
