Show SAN FRANCISCO ON THE EVE OF ANOTHER STREET CAR STRIKE - I San Francisco, April 6. The people of this city are disturbed by the pros- J pects of another big street car strike; which may be declared within the next' few days1. The Carmen's union has thrown down the gauntlet to the United Railways and the next move will be from the officials of the corporation. What their action will be may be predicted pre-dicted by the decisive manner in which they today refused to accede to the demands de-mands of the union. The union had made formal presentation presenta-tion of its attitude to the United Railways, Rail-ways, demanding a flat rate of 27'i cents per hour for all employes, irrespective irre-spective of their time of service and i that no more "student?" be engaged to be "broken in" to the work. It is overj this second demand th.it th m-ocont- trouble has been so speedily brought to a crisis. The employes assert that the company has- been bringing in many men from other cities with the understanding under-standing that they will remain stead-fast stead-fast during a strike. It is further i churged that although tho newcomers I have joined the union they have no ' sympathy with the union. As a result the union b-adf-rs issued orders that all workmen immediately imme-diately refuse to give further instructions instruc-tions to students. It was understood j that the moment an employe- was dis- charged for declining to act as tutor t", an apprentii-e that a general meeting i would be called to consider the cities- j tion of declaring a strike. This? afternoon after-noon all students were refused instrue-tion instrue-tion and so reported to the district superintendents, su-perintendents, but no action was taken.
