Show I I BESETTING SIN OF WOMAN. I "Our American women are proverbi- ally overworked," claims Mrs. F. M. j Colby in the December Woman's Home k Companion. "Many of them are of a j slender, fragile build, not able to. per- ! form the herculean task of the fabled f Sisyphus, ever repeating a tedious (I routine; that is. rolling the never-ceas- ing stone. It makes one's heart ache I to think of all the rough work they do f work that sometimes their husbands I know nothing about and think nothing i j about tasks that are often done by the light of the lamp, whose blaze is fei by the midnight oil. And this work is f kept up until at last the tired nerves , give way or a cough comes on, a sen- ( sible decline begins, the housewife falls 'f down prematurely, and a husband is left j wifeless and a family without a mother. !. Somebody is at 'fault for all this, but !' who shall we blame?- Life demands so i much; society demands so much; your If own ambition and pride and your hus- , ! band's welfare and success are exact- ing constant surrenders of time and i strength. But there should be a limit.. I No woman Can afford to sacrifice her " " health and welfare of her higher na- ? ture at any price. Work thus becomes j a moloch; but why not refuse the terri- f ble offering of life and blood and ; I strength it claims? Take time to rest. i Kecreate, read, attend the quarterly t meetings. A human life, a soul's hap piness, is worth more than a few paltry pal-try dollars, the pleasure of outshining your neighbors, having a better house or better dressed children. Tired, nervous, ner-vous, overtaxed wives, drop that work now and run out and breathe the fresh air of the fields. Take your children out under the trees. You will be the better for it and the work will not be the worse. An hour's ramble or rest, .listening to the singing of he birds, the whirr of insects, watching the Shadows Shad-ows play with the sunshine and drinking drink-ing in the reviving freshness of the balmy winds is cheaper than a doctor's call." |
