' (.Written for The Intennouiitain Catholic.) The -spirit of the age is insubordination. Irs tendency is to disrupt society by disrespecting- authority. au-thority. To cope with the evils which necessarily follow from the pernicious doctrines that' are preached is the problem which is now attracting the attention of our wisest statesmen' and all prac tical (common sense business men. In the sacred names of liberty and equality, the cry of oppression, oppres-sion, and robbery are heard on all sides and from j:11 quarters and with it, the accompanying determination deter-mination of resistance to all civil authority, nay more the ditruction of its representatives. Only last week the news was flashed over the wires that plot to assassinate the president of the United, i r States was unearthed. In a mining- camp in the "-'- far west an inhuman wretgli,car.se4 - the Stars-ami-Stripes, ihe glorious mblem of our libert When released he repeated the treason. These rumblings 1 f assassination, discontent and disloyalty are not confined to any particular locality. They extend from the Atlantic to the Pacifiic coast, and their follower-; are increasing to an alarming- extent. With liberty emblazoned on their banners their appeals ap-peals to ihe dissatisfied and discontented are not in yum. "License they mean when they cry liberty." How remedy those evil forebodings? How guard ataiiKt the insidious attacks upon individuals, individ-uals, society and the powers that are? If we are to intrut our future safety, to the intelligence and patriotism of ihe people, who will vouch for the perpetuity of our government, should -it fall into the hands of those whose sole ambition is material prosperity and temporal gain? Intelligence without with-out virtue is ;i poor safeguard for the honesty and integrity of any government. Virtue is a moral excellence, practice of duty, abstinence from vice. wrtuc without intelligence is not enough to protect pro-tect individuals or society in their sacred rights. It would only expose them to the greed and avarice of . would-be deigning and unscrupulous leaders who put themselves forth as the champions of liberty lib-erty and equality. Their intelligence, lacking vir- 1ue. only serves to make them more adroit schemers hi id successful swindlers. Thry, then, who speak -f universal education as a panacea for all the evils ihat affect" society, are now learning from experience ihat education, to be successful, must recognize the moral and religious principles which bind the creature to his Creator. . Education at the '.pen-e of virlno, no matter how highly cultivated ih" young graduates may be, does not serve as a protection to society, or advance the cause of civilization. civ-ilization. They, who would eliminate from the curriculum cur-riculum of studies the responsibilities of the soul ' and the development of the heart which are the i! oldest and grandest characteristics of human nature, na-ture, will hope in vain for civic virtues. Obedience I tn law jitnl respect for authority are civic virtues I which unbelievers and political atheists would I aim to inculcate independent of the supernat- j ural or spiritual order, forgetting that when the j nobler part of man, viz.. his spiritual nature, is I suppressed or blotted out and that he lives only if for the gratification of the animal nature, obedi- l i ence to law and respect for authority are lost vir- f " 1ue. The huge corporations that command bil- l lions are every day indicted for disobeying the I laws the organs of anarchy hold up the chief execu- tive of the nation to ridicule, and by their vile car- .. features not only lessen, but entirely efface from 1 ihe hearts of their followers that love, loyalty and I "respect which every patriotic citizen should have i fc-r the authority of the president of the. United I States. These evils are increasing, in proportion J s each succeeding generation are weaned away i from Gar), and live for the gratification of their j animal passions. So much so ihat many far-seeing persons, who. in the past, took part "in sowing the ! wind of unbelief and are now reaping the whirl- ! wind of irreverance, would gladly retrace their steps I fvid have the worship of God resubstituted for that of Mammon, i. e.. Christian virtues for modern paganism. Apart from religion this can not be ac-4 ac-4 eomph'shed. Religion is the foundation for all vir- tue. Hence when and where, and that is always v and everywhere, virtue and intelligence are sought for. by no other means can they be secured outside " , j of religion. A nation without religion cannot per- i pei u ate its' national life. It may progress mater- f ially advance in intelligence, yet if wanting in vir- I me instead of peace, happiness, love ami loyalty, l ihe'fruits of religion, there will be discontent, mis-- l I erv. selfi-hjie-s. greed and disloyalty, the fruits of 1 infidelity. The present state of society as well as . 1 I the whole history of the pagan world proves this to be fact. The decay of religion, no belief in tfod or immortality simply means the introduction of brute force to preserve order in society, obedience to laws, and external respect at least for the authority author-ity of the state. Even with all the physical machinery machin-ery of the state when the murmuring of discontent increase and multiply and tile army of anarchists . are receiving recruits from-the intelligent, how stem ihe tide of disloyalty and command respect for ihe authority of the state, and obedience to its laws.' Convince the masses by specious sophistery that they are deprived of iheir liberty, enslaved (hat they are entitled to a share of the justly or unjustly acquired wealth of the rich, and respect and submission to latv and order cease to be" a virtue. vir-tue. The nation will find itself face (o face with an infuriated mob, whose molt'o -is, f'livo and be merry for tomorrow you die." When the French republic strove to rule without religion it faild miserably. We are losing faith in God, in the principles of honesty and justice, love and eternity, and substituting for these greed, avarice and our only heaven, in the acquisition of wealth. With this growing tendency and the decay of religion, how solve the problems ihat are daily arising? The question is one which should and ia commanding' the attention of our best statesmen, profoundest scholars and wisest churchmen, and the only answer an-swer is that for peace and happiness, for mutual . love and confidence we need a revival of that living faith which, in the earlier ages, tamed the uncultured uncul-tured and wild barbarism, and eivilized and humanized human-ized the untutored savage.
