Show SILVER JUBILEE OF A POPULAR PRIEST. , Oakland, Juno 3. The members of the parish of St. Francis c'.e Sales are preparing for the celebration of the silver jubilee of the Rev. Fither Thorn- as McSweenev. pastor of the church and founder of the parish. June -4 will be the twenty-fifth anniversary of Father McSweeney's ordination a3 a ' priest, and special services will be hel j f in the church on the morning of that day. In the evening an entertainment will be. given in St. Francis de Sales hall. The congregation has named the following fol-lowing committee to make arrangements: arrange-ments: Rev. Father Cull, assistant pas- tor of St. Francis de Sales Church; P. J. Ryan, Edward Hogan. P. N. Har.ra- han. P. J. Crowley, J. J. I'owers. Thomas Thom-as Lamping. M. Spencer, Neil Gallaghej and L. Moriarity. Father McSweeney is one of the most popular and best known of the Catho- lie clergy in this state. He was graduated grad-uated at All Hallows college. Dublin, June 24, ISTii, and a few months later ( came to San Francisco. He reached Oakland in 1SSI and offciated as assist- ant to Rev. Michael King, pastor of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. When, six years later, the increase of population in the northern part of this city necessitated the establishment of , another parish. Archbishop Riordan be- stowed the honor of the new pastorate on the Rev. Father McSweeney. The first service of the parish was held in Hanitin hall, at Nineteenth . street and San Pablo avenue. A year later a combination church and school building was erected at Jones and Grove streets. This building served in- til the Dresent handsome brick edifice at Hobart.and Grove 'streets took its place. , |
