Father Kelly made two visit? to Utah. 3 i I During his second visit he urchael r the lot i7i a hkh the present church i stands. In 1876 Father Kelly made a 2 J J' brief, visit .to the former scene of 'ihis ! labors, and with the writer, called ' on , " Bripham Young, who received him s most, cordially, and expressed his regret 5 J I that he Father Kelly did not continue ' i ('his minisu-atioiis in- Utah: and before j ' his departure presented him with a (J j new book with his autograph. The fj friendly feelings shown by Brigham " ' j Young were sincere. They were mutual , too, for Father Kelly told his com-" com-" panion, the j.resent writer, that on different dif-ferent occasions when he called on " Biigham Young he always befriended . him. After securing the lot purchased , 1 for the Church edifice, it was found there was a Haw in the title. The title to the property purchased in pood faith, was to be legally contested. Father Kelly told the contestant that s he wanted no legal proceedings; that he 'bought the property in pood faith, and . had paid the market price-for it, and would abide by the decision of Brigham Young. As a compromise it was so apreed. They called on Brigham I " Young and his decision was that. -a clear title should be given to the Father, and all counter claims against - the property should be -wiped out. d This decision was final, and a perfect ie title to the property was secured, n On another occasion Father Kelly received a written notice to leave the j x s city. It was after the burial of Dr. - l. Robinson, whose funeral he et tended. :- NVxt day he repaired to the office of Brigham Younp, handing him the (1 notice. It was read carefully, and after q pausing for a few minutes. Brigham said. "Father Kelly, that was never written by my people, and I can prove u that from the quality of the paper f used. You remain,- and I will see that t r you shall not be disturbed, and that f nut eve'n a hair of your head shall be o touched." He did remain, and said f that the explanation made to him was y t most plausible. 0 j. Reference is made to these facts be-t be-t t cause the winter has seen articles v written by sensational writers who not y c only distorted the real facts, but pre-n pre-n t denied! Father Kelly as being in emin-- emin-- ent danger of his life. The charge has r , no foundation in fact, was never repre. . t sented as such by the priest himself: on the very contrary he considered 1 t himself entirely safe, and looked upon t Brigham Young as a devoted, sincere 3 j friend. His first services were held t in the old assembly hall, which, as a f j mark of courtesy, was placed at his s t disposal. - t Father Kelly returned to the diocese - of Marysville in the winter of 1866. In . . t JSCS Bight Rev. P. Bachbouff was - consecrated titular Bishop of Epip-i Epip-i j lania. and Vicar Apostalic of Colorado j and Utah. He appointed Father Foley ( pastor of Salt Bake, and surrounding - , districts, the same year. The Bishoo j himself officially visited Salt Lake a:id t j other cities in 1X6S. During- his si- l j journ he was the guest of JuriKe ; j Thomas Marshall, and said mass in his ! - t house. Father Foley, during his ! . j Pastorate, held services in a small I 5 t adobe building- which has long since j 1 I , disappeared, to make way for the pres- l . ent church edifice. The members of his . congregation at the time were very - ! few. Those given to the writer as , j practical members were Mrs. Thomas - i Marshall, Mrs. Governor Vaughan. J. - ( J. and T. B. O'Reilly. Judge Barron. .1. j B. Burns. C. B. Dahler. Mrs. Simpkins I and family. Father Folev contirued his ministrations till the end of 1870, when the Holy See, at the urgent re- I qust of its Vicar Apostolic, placed Utah temporally under the' jurisdic- I j iioii of San Francisco.- . - - j ;j (To be Continued.) |
