Fellow Prisoner of John Boyle O'Reilly O'Reil-ly Died in Chicago Hospital. 1 .Martin HVigan. one of the seven I Irish patriots transported with John Boyle O'Reilly to Van Dieman's Land, Australia, in 1S66, died Tuesday in Chicago. Chi-cago. In the spring of 1869 the whaling ship Catapala was fitted out for a voyage to Australia to rescue O'Reilly and the others convicted with him, but before its arrival O'Reiiiy had escaped at night in an open boat and was picked up at sea by the Gazelle, an American whaler. A few weeks later the Catapala Cata-pala arrived off Van Dieman's land and rescued Hogan and five companions. Dennis McCarthy, now a dry goods merchant in Chicago, then engaged in business in Cork, was the man who furnished most of the money to equip the Catapala for its daring expedition. Hogan had lived in Chicago for more than a quarter of a century. His vigorous vig-orous health was impaired by imprisonment, imprison-ment, and he has never since been strong enough wholly to support his family. He died at the Cook county hospital. I |
