Show Wexford. By the recent death of "the Ten. Archdeacon Arch-deacon Furlong. V. G., D. D., Gorey, the diocese of Ferns loses a very distinguished dis-tinguished ecclesiastic. The archdeacon archdea-con can came of a family that gave many members to the priesthood. Two of his granduncles were parish priests of Iady's 'sland, his native parish, and he himself was one of three brothers destined for the ministry, one of whom died while an ecclesiastical student, and the other survives as parish priest of Taghmon. Archdeacon Furlong was born in 1836 at Ballygarra, in Laelyfs Island parish. From St. Peter's college, col-lege, Wexford, he passed to Louvain. and was ordained in I860. Under his gtanduncle. Archdeacon Walsh, he cooperated co-operated in the building of the Church of the Assumption in Lady's Island. In 1S66 he succeeded his cousin. Father Thomas Walsh, in Enniscorthy.- and while administrator built the cathedral spire, which is so much admired. He was appointed pastor c-f Ballygarrett in 1876, and during his administration built the beautiful little church of "The Star of the Sea," at Courtown. The Parish of Gorey came under his charge in 1887, and here a long series of works will preserve his memory. These include in-clude the Tara Hill school, the curate's residence, interior furnishing and decoration deco-ration of the church. While engaged on these works the archdeacon was unceasing un-ceasing in his devotion to spiritual duty, and particularly In his comfort of the sick and charity to the poor. He was a great theologian and linguist, and was very attractive in the pulpit. |
