Show THIRD WEEK AT CLIFT HAVEN. Everything- in Full Swing at Catholic Summer School. Editor Intermountain Catholic: It would be well for one who doubts the importance of the Catholic summer school as a factor in the life of the Catholic people of this country, to be here during this week the third of the present session. For now everything every-thing is jn full swing, the crowds are here, and life is at its very best. Al- though July is av notably poor month at most summering places, it has been exceptionally good this year at Cliff Haven. There are at present over 100 ahead of the number here at the same time last year, and there are another 100 in prospect within the next two or three days. Certainly there can be no stronger proof of the attractiveness of ! beautiful Cliff Haven. Without doubt, one of the most potent factors in( the remarkable success of the year is the superior excellence of the lecture courses. Never before has there been so excellent a programme of studies. During this week, the members mem-bers of the school have had the opportunity oppor-tunity of hearing two of the most famous fa-mous representatives of Catholic learning, learn-ing, one. a distinguished clergyman and the other, probably the most wide-ljvknown wide-ljvknown of the new sqhool of Catholic writers.- Both lecturers, Rt. Rev. Mgr. James R Loughlin, D. D., and James J. alsh, M. D., Ph. D., are old friends one having been the second president of the school, and the other having been a lecturer at six consecutive sessions. The Council of Trent, a subject of vital and perenial interest to Catholics was the theme of Mgr. Loughlin's lectures. lec-tures. None the less attractive was Recent Biology," the subjec t , of Dr W alsh's lectures. Nor are these all the intellectual advantages of Cliff Haven. ! By the. establishment of the New York ' State Teachers' institute there are about forty classes under the supervision super-vision of; skilled specialists, open, to the patrons of the school opportunities which "are thoroughly appreciated at Cliff Haven. But two weeks more of I the Institute remain. Its place will be taken 'by conferences on charities, Sunday Sun-day schools and reading "circles all of Which serve to bring hitherward Home of the most prominent Catholic men and women working In these lines. Were;one to stop here and think that Intellectual courses arc the only attractions, at-tractions, he would miss the essential cause" of Cliff Haven popularity, and the many-sided interests to which it 'appeals and the all round development at which it alms. For the ideals of the summer school are not. one, but many the promotion ' of sociability, the .spread of truth and the spiritual uplift-I uplift-I ing of its patrons. "It is only by taking j these three into consideration and by j noting their perfect blending that a ' person can truly understand that spirit j of joy and of content which is the lot of ' the enthusiastic, summer schooler. He 1 can likewise see how the days are spent by the guests, to whom nothing is compulsory, com-pulsory, yet In whom perfect freedom brings about a. remarkable concordance of action. At the same time he can discern dis-cern that Faith ir the unifying princi-! princi-! pie which binds all together, and which determines the bent and nature of each ! memlier's inclinations. Between 7 and 3 in the morning many are to be found I assisting at one or.another" of the thirty thir-ty masses that are the daily glory of Cliff Haven. The evening bell calls still more to the little chapel for the daily recitation of the Rosary or for the semi'Weekly benediction. The religious re-ligious life, at Cliff Haven is unquestionably unques-tionably strong, deep and abiding. , The problem how to promote sociability socia-bility is solved by the bringing of all together informally each evening in one of the pleasant cottages. During this week, a musieale, two hops, a euchre and a guessing party have furnished amusement for all. Hospitality is a. byword here every member of 'the school Is invited to these functions, and the. result is that this charming intercourse inter-course frequently develops into life-long friendslrp. |
