Show THE ATHANASIAN CREED. The' interest attaching to the recent discussions in Convocation on the advisability of retaining the j Athanasian Creed in divine service has been increased in-creased by an article in the current . Nineteenth Century from the pen of the English Bishop Well-don, Well-don, lie asks three questions: Shall it bo re-translated, or expurgated, or explained? As to re-translation, it. would be useless, he thinks; for the objectionable ob-jectionable teaching would stjll remain. As to expurgation ex-purgation why., of course, how can a creed be chopped and changed? ,As to explanation, how can youexplain away clauses which must bo held to mean something, and may as likely mean what they say as anything else? But if you can neither re-translate, nor expurgate, nor explain the troublesome trouble-some creed, how would it do to abolish it altogether; alto-gether; since it is in its present form unacceptable? The bishop has a better plan. He says: ''The creed is so apt to be misunderstood that it ought not to be used in public services. It should be a work, not for recitation, but for referenced Excellent ! exclaims ex-claims the London Catholic Times. One step further, fur-ther, Bishop Welldon; let the Bible, too, "be a work, not for recitation, but for reference," and then the real fundamental belief of the Establishment Establish-ment will 'be clear a noonday. |
