An address from the priests was read hy Father Day, who has been administrator ad-ministrator of the diocese since the death of Bishop Brondell. Full of expressions of love and loyalty tiie priests many hearty welcomes showed their joy on lhat solemn occasion. Responding to the address ad-dress -Bishop Carroll said: "J ciin find no vords in which to adequately express-the gratitude that is in my heart tonight. I shall never be able to thank (Joel for all He has done for me, but tonight L thank Him most for calling me to be bishop of the church at Helena; for placing plac-ing in my hands a power for doing good that i havo never . before possessed. I feel as did Saint Paul, when he declared- that ho had beeu called to preach the gospel called not by men but by Jesus Christ. These are the sentiments that swell up in my heart tonight. "It was with reluctance that I accepted the high honor that has been conferred upon me. I had given my life to the work of training young men for thaholy priesthood. I loved the work, and 1 parted with that work, I say, with regret. But when I" saw that the finger of God was in the call to this high office, I had only to bow to the will of the su- , preme pontiff. , . , , -. "And havimr accepted;' I come to you riot with reluctance, but with feelings of joy, because, having hav-ing accepted the chalice and drained it to the dregs,- i I come to give my life to these new duties, which ' have become 'sweeter than the honey in the honey-i honey-i comb.' j "I thank the priests and the people of Helena and Montana for the beautiful sentiments expressed. ex-pressed. They are words of loyalty, assuring me that you will stand by me through thick and thin, that together we will put our shoulders to the wheel and make the church in Montana grow on and on to greater things. Every talent. I possess shall be devoted to making you holy, even as Christ is holy, and to bring you nearer, nearer to the secred heart of Jesus. "I thank Father Day for selecting by motto, 'In Sanctitate et Justitia." Holiness and -justice go together. To following this motto and making it a living thing in the church, I shall, give all the talent God' has bestowed upon me all the energy, all the devotion I may possess. I come pledging my affection, my love, and my loyalty: to support you in all your trials and in all your difficulties. I come to you as a father no, not as a father, for some of you are of such 'age in the blessed service as that you might be father to mo but I come rather as a brother, to help you and. to do all things for the betterment bet-terment of the community and the state. I come not without knowledge of tho difficulties that will beset my path, and tho difficulties that will come to you, but these will vanish as chaff before the wind "when avc work together for the one great end, as I know Ave shall. " ' "May God bless us all. May the sacred heart of (Jod bring us all closer together, and may His blessings be upon us during my reign in Helena. Before Jesus let us kneel and ask Him to make us more just and more holy, so that we may walk in holiness and justice all the days of our lives." After the impressive address' the priests of the diocese approached the throne and made their obeisance and kissed his lordship's ring. The ceremony cere-mony closed with solemn benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. At the conclusion, as the ucav bishop 1 and lm ecclesiastical "associates were leaving the sanctuary, the choir sang Gounod's "Praise Ye the Father.1' ' - |
