American Legion To Assist I In National Defense Program The American Legion working through its 11.715 posts is going to ,-egister all of its 1.078.119 mem-,K,Vs mem-,K,Vs if possible, lor na'ioual defense de-fense service. Unaffiliated W or.d War veterans also will be asked to register. The registration will be entirely voluntary. Us purpose is to provide the local, stale and national na-tional leadership of the American Legion with a complete inventory of the assets of the organization m manpower, experience, and special training that could be made available avail-able to the government if needed in the defense of the nation. National Commander Milo J. Warner has proclaimed Saturday, February 22, the 20th anniversary of the birth of George, Washington, as national defense registration day for all Legionnaires and unaffiliated unaffili-ated World war veterans who care to do so. On that day every American Legion Le-gion post in the country will ask its membership and local World war veterans generally to fill out a Questionnaire. This form will be in triplicate. It will chronicle eve-ery eve-ery Legionnaire's capabilities and talents which could be.i used in national na-tional defense. The post will retain re-tain the original copy of the questionnaire. ques-tionnaire. The second copy will go to the department headquarters. The last copy will go to national headquarters. From these copies will be compiled post, department and national indices of American Legion national defense assets. Local Post Ready The Preston Post No. 34 of the American Legion in this city will undertake to register all Legionnaires Legion-naires and unaf filial ed World war veterans in this community and surrounding area. "This is a summons for possible important service to God and country coun-try whomj we served as young men in 1917-18," Commander Fred Sargent Sar-gent of the local post said. "I feel certain that every Legionnaire and World War veterans generally will welcome tin's opportunity of perhaps per-haps doing another bit for their country. We do not expect to be called for active military service. Most of us are beyond that age. But there are many home defense duties du-ties to be performed. "I urge every Legionnaire and other interested World War veterans vet-erans in this community to register on February 22. It you are going to be out of town on that date, fill out your questionnaire before you leave. It is a patriotic duty, and we of the American Legion have never shirked our duty, or lagged in our patriotism. The time has come again when we may be called upon once more to stand up for America, and I am sure every Legionnaire in this community is ready." Appointment of a special committee com-mittee to handle the voluntary registration of all local Legionnaires Legion-naires and World War veterans generally for possible . future national na-tional defense service as part of the nationwide American Legion preparedness for any emergency was announced here today by Commander Sargent.
