Marbre, who piloted Willys Americar, Plainsman model with overdrive, over the gruelling 600-mile course, getting 29.06 miles perj gallon, A. E. Hollingsworth. representative in this area, announced an-nounced today. ! Thisj performance, achieved at an average speed of 42.41 miles per hour, automatically sets the minimum mini-mum mileage requirement for the Willys Americar economy contest. Under the rules, a year's free supply of gas and oil is to be furnished! fur-nished! to the driver who can furthest fur-thest exceed, on a measured gal' Ion of gas, the best mileage per gallon attained, by any; of the Willys Wil-lys Americars in the Gilmore classic. clas-sic. Mr. Hollingsworth explained that the contest is designed to focus public attention on the need for conservation of the nation's gas aua on auring the present national nation-al defense emergency. All contestants from the Preston area will be given a carefullv measured quota of gas in a new Willys Americar and, under the supervision of an official checker will drive from the showroom until' the fuel is exhausted. The checker will record the mileage obtained and return the driver to the starting start-ing point. Entrants' mileage records rec-ords will be checked against those turned in by other contestants and the driver who has obtained the greatest mileage in excess of the Willys Americans Gilmore record on his quota of gas will bo; awarded award-ed the prize. |
