J DEASLEY HEASLEY Committee Chairman Through this committee the merchants have been advised to organize into an association to handle many of their own problems such as legislative measures which tend to increase taxes and the burden of making making making mak mak- ing numerous reports An organization was effected and as a result of their activities Fred Warner was appointed to one of the State Boards Present indications are arc that this association will function to the betterment of merchants' merchants problems or from it will come a good strong division of the Chamber Chamber Chamber Cham Cham- ber of Commerce to handle these affairs A very serious attempt was made during the year to get better schedules for tourists handled by the Utah Parks Company so as to leave the tourists in Cedar City for several hours to or from the Parks Past experience indicates that tourists spend a great deal of money and that it is widely distributed among the merchants Indications Indication are that schedules will be rearranged next year and that there will v be a regular passenger train to Cedar City during the tourist season Continual attempts have been made to get better mail schedules and service I Industries HERBERT MILNE Committee Chairman Much study and several very serious attempts have ha been made to secure new industries for Cedar City An attempt was made to get a branch of a Woolen Mill for Cedar City We have the assurance that if the company expands Cedar City will receive serious con cott- consideration consideration for a branch At present it looks very favora favorable le for the establishment establishment establishment establish establish- ment here of a chicken and turkey hatchery An attempt was made to secure a poultry dressing plant and favorable headway was made If this is followed followed fol fol- fol lowed up it may be secured at nt some future date probably pro bably next year or not later than 1939 Public Affairs And Advertising CLARENCE E E. E MILLER Committee Chairman During February the Legislature and the Associated Associated Associated Asso Asso- Civic Clubs were entertained here at a cost of to the Chamber We feel that this entertain- entertain was an exceptionally good investment The Legislators were divided into groups along the lines of their committee appointments and different interested groups of our citizens were Yere permitted to meet with them and take up their problems The visit to the school was restricted to study of school needs As a result the school received favorable appropriations for this bi biennium Farmers with pumping and irrigation problems met with the committee from the Legislature Legislature Legisla ture and took up their problems Likewise Fish and Game Merchants Livestock men and other groups group had meetings with their groups and altogether much was accomplished The rhe Easter Easier er Pageant at Zion National Park was an outstanding success and can be rated as probably th the greatest publicity stunt in calling attention to the I Parks that has ever been attempted Many newspapers newspaper and magazines in all parts of the country carried stories storie of the Pageant before and after it was staged More than W was 8 spent for the pageant However sale of advertising and sale of programs offset more than of this And in addition costumes and music which has hns been saved for future years will represent an asset of more than Henry Petersen acted as general chairman and together with his various committees and Grant Redford author of the script is entitled to much credit Preparation for next years year's presentation of the pageant including advertising selection of a new anti and permanent site and assigning supporting activities to other communities has again been started In connection with Washington County transportation transportation transportation tation was furnished from Cedar to Zion and return for the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir when the Memorial Memorial Mem Mem- orial Day broadcast was made from the Park This broadcast was heard all over the nation and letters of commendation have been received from all parts of the country For this event the Chamber arranged for more than cars to transport the Choir members Space was taken in the Salt Lake Tribune Scenic edition issued in Ma May Nearly copies of this issue were distributed throughout the nation and a abig abig abig big percentage of the space was devoted to southern Utah scenic attractions In addition to the advertising space the Chamber purchased copies for distri More than ten thousand Cedar City advertising folders were distributed These were sent to schools to tourist bureaus in the United States and Canada and anti to tourists all over the country who wrote asking for information Backing and support were given to the County Fair Study was given the matt matter r of providing stickers of Cedar Breaks and assurance was given by National Park officials that they would be distributed to tourIsts tourists tour tour- if provided This will be a n good advertising me me- Permanent Projects C. B J. J Finch of the Bureau of Public Roads and several engineer engineers en en- Mr Finch is very much interested ted in the Cedar canyon road and has promised his hi support until it is completed Bridge hazards north of town will be removed removed re re- re moved next year A Flood Control project south of town has required much time The Soil heads were brought to Cedar City and it was thought that a plan was worked out to assure the job going through However it was later discovered that they desired to bring into the district too much land which would work to the detriment of the livestock interest t and a new plan had to be devised It now appears that by cooperation of the Division of Grazing and the State Road Commission Com Corn mission the project is assured and will be completed before the next flood season A study was made of the City water rights and titles Much comment had been made concerning this and it was thought advisable to make a study This resulted result result- ed in in a better understanding and concrete recommendations recommendations recommendations recommend recommend- being made to protect the city rights and titles Livestock And Agriculture DOUGLAS CLARK Committee Chairman Through the activities of this committee clo close e harmony harmony harmony har har- mony has been maintained between the live livestock tock in interests interests interests in- in that those of business The livestock people have supported the Chamber of Commerce well and the Chamber has assisted the Livestock association in its development programs During the summer the State Convention was held in Cedar City and the Chamber assisted in making it a success s. s Legislative It R J.
