Show " O life 1 1 NEWSBOY and his 'NEWSDOG' At Waynesville, N. C, 35-year-old Roy Moseman is totally blind, but he and Sally move along faster than most folks. Sally is a Seeing Eye dog who has made Roy into a confident, successful neicspaper deal' er. Sally is uncanny. Her biggest job is leading Roy on his delivery route, where new subscribers and discontinuances dis-continuances make for constant con-stant change. But Sally has learned her way and quickly quick-ly adapts herself to new stops. Waynesville folks say Moseman is one of the town's business leaders. He ranks just below Sally! I Here are Roy and Sally, starting -"- out briskly on their daily delivery de-livery route, the blind Roy depending entirely on his four-footed eyes. Note the confidence in his stride, also how Sally assumes an attitude of complete com-plete leadership. The papers must be delivered! ey The paper route includes both business and residential areas. Above, Sally stops as a subscriber comes outside his store to take his paper. Next day this subscriber may quit, so Sally will cease stopping in front of his door every day. That takes intelligence! O Like all newsboys, Roy tosses his papers on the porch. If he misses, Sally breaks away, picks np the paper and carries it back to her master for another try. After a few days Roy learns the exact location of the porch and seldom misses his throw. vSA 1 if ti 1 btdtacJLw'V -$3sWfcH . A In addition to carrying papers, Moseman operates a news stand. His "eyes" are with him every moment mo-ment of the day as he vends papers to hundreds of customers. And if, in making change, a coin slips from Roy's hand and falls to the sidewalk E Roy need only cry, "Fetch, " Sally!" and the dog, who has already al-ready heard the metallic clink, is on her feet. Sniffing around, she picks up the coin with her mouth and brings it back to Moseman. Incidentally, Inci-dentally, it's hard for a dog to pick np money with his mouth. (L Sally is a Black Labrador, " trained by the famous Seeing Eye institute. This North Carolina animal merely typifies the splendid work these loyal animals are doing to bring a more Independent life to hundreds of blind people throughout the world. |
