' 'The Biological' Survey, Under " who's direction the project is "being "be-ing built, has several fine bufld- Ings as a headquarters for the Sanctuary. Engineer Vaneze Wilson Wil-son formerly .of Logan is now in charge of the project. Before ' beginning the tour of the project 1 Mr. Wilson gave a short talk ex-' ex-' plaining ' interesting! features of the Sanctuary. The Federal buildings build-ings form the- center of large dykes which extend for several "miles In several directions to impound im-pound the water in small lakes and to separate it from the salt! water ' from great Salt Lake. On I these dykes are good concrete J highways for traffic when per- mitted. The Sanctuary contains more than 30000 acres of marsh I anda. According to Engineer Wilson Wil-son the project is proving; a success suc-cess as the bird population is much on the increase. The bird disease has been controlled considerably. con-siderably. There is much insect and plant food in the bottom of the marshes for all the ducks, geese and other water birds. During Dur-ing the year more than 200 species of birds and water fowls have been noted at the Sanctuary. Sanctu-ary. The wild geese have hatched and many of tham with their young are now on the flattie lakes and can be seen from the dykes. Many of the ducks are setting and will not hatch for - another two weeks. 't ' Visitors are allowed at the Sanctuary San-ctuary on certain dykes. All must register; at the main office. iLast - year with the Sanctuary partly opened to the public they had 5,000 visitors. This year they expect ex-pect at least 20,000. According to Commissioner Nielsen, Secretary Hovey and Mr. Wilson it is well worth the trip to the Sanctuary. To get the most out of the trip, however, it is necessary for - persons per-sons to be good "Observers : , and get the names of the birds. |
