Show Exploring Scouts Home From Idaho By Robert Crookston Well, the exploring scouts returned re-turned last evening from a 9-day hike in Custer County, Idaho. This region is probably as primitive prim-itive as any section in this country coun-try Th8 boys made a very accurate' accur-ate' estimate of the food required, they of course carried everything i with them and the main concern was to have Just enough and no excess luggage to be carrying. There were some t uncertain whether or not to carry canteens for water and the decision was not to be burdened with water bottles. This proved to be correct, as they were near good drinking water throughout the trip. They caught all the fish (trout) they wanted nri brought some home. We saw one boy with a 30 pound salmon. This was caught with a speer attached to a willow. One interesting thing was the radio equipment at each Ranger station and used frequently to give any location of careless campers, cigarettes and forest fires. Also the surprise of seeing a landing field way back in the mountains and used by the forest rangers. There was no place along tms route while on the hike where food could be bought, so it was a case of cook fish and then more fish. There was no rain and aside from one boy getting a leg bruised by a rolling rock, no one received any hurts. The record of this trip should be of interest to younger scouts who may wish to take a similar trip, so lay off the cigarettes. |
