Show m County Taxpayers In Important Meet More than 100 taxpayers of Sanpete, San-pete, representing practically every town in the county, attended the afternoon af-ternoon and evening meetings of the Sanpete County Taxpayers' association associa-tion at Ephraim Wednesday, says the Mt. Pleasant Pyramid. Out of a maze of discussion the meetings succeeded suc-ceeded in passing five motions relating relat-ing to taxation and kindred subjects. The resolution drawn up by the taxpayers of Cache county and presented pre-sented to Governor Geo. H. Dem, calling for a reduction in salaries of public officials throughout the state, was indorsed by a unanimous vote at the morning session. A motion also was passed to have a committee of six, three from each of North and South Sanpete school districts , investigate in-vestigate the possibilities of consolidating consoli-dating the two districts in an effort to lessen expenses of administration. This committee is to be prepared to report at a meeting October 23, when Ephraim Bergeson, former president of the Utah State Farm bureau, will be a special speaker. Another motion called for relief to the extent of a 25 per cent reduction reduc-tion in taxes due this fall. Just who was to give the reduction was not made clear, but the spirit of the meeting demonstrated clearly that the taxpayers are united in demanding demand-ing immediate and definite relief. A cut of 25 per cent in the salaries of all those on the public payroll in Sanpete was demanded by a motion passed in the evening meeting. The motion also included a 25 per cent reduction in traveling expenses allowed allow-ed certain county and school officers. Belief that there is extravagance in the court house that can be eliminated elimin-ated was demonstrated when the more than 100 persons present at the evening meeting passed a motion to have a committee of three make an investigation into the number of deputies de-puties employed, the reasons for high cost of collecting taxes in this county and other matters of county government. govern-ment. This committee is also to report re-port on October 23. Both meetings were very spirited and, while no formal motion was made to refuse to pay taxes, a number num-ber of speakers advocated this unless tangible relief is given immediately. The meetings were called by Geo. B. Cox, Jr., of Manti, president of the Sanpete County Taxpayers' association, asso-ciation, and he was in charge of both sessions. |
