Show fourth of July Is I Fittingly Observed By Hundreds Here j Gunnison's Independence day celebration, cele-bration, characteristic of previous years, was staged in an appropriate i manner, and when the last number on i the program was finished everybody was happy and joyous for the splen-! splen-! did entertainment that had been prepared pre-pared by the committee. A little sprinkling of rain on the night of the 3rd tended to lower the tempora-I tempora-I ture, and the day was ideal for the j events. The early morning sunrise salute I soon brought the throngs to the streets and the Centerfield band, under un-der the direction of Gilbert Fjeldsted, gave patriotic selections for an hour. The Casino theatre, where the program pro-gram was given, was filled to capacity capa-city at ten-thirty. Mayor Andrew Mo-deen Mo-deen acted as master of ceremonies. Francis Roberts, acting as "Goddess of Liberty," and1 her maids, Little Barbara Nelson and Darlene Sorenson, Soren-son, completed a pretty setting. The program, as announced, was carried out as follows: Opening song, "America," "Amer-ica," congregation; invocation, Hyrum Fredrickson; reading, Mrs. Li J. Kidman; vocal solo, Mrs. Emily Knighton; quartet selection, June Duggins, Pauline Michaelson, lumbal Larsen and Uhlan Swalberg; piano solo, Chester Hill; vocal solo, Earl James; oration, Therold Jensen of Ephraim; violin solo, Frank Eggert-sen; Eggert-sen; vocal solo, Ralph Britsch, and benediction by Hyrum Fredrickson. Hundreds of children, as well as many of the older folks, gathered at i North First West street to take part in a program of sports contests, arranged ar-ranged especially for the little folks. The races, arranged for children from three years and up, and comprising many kinds, drew a good crowd and the contests were keenly waged. At six o'clock a free dancing party was j held at Cremona for the children. The center of attraction was the exhibition baseball game at the Gunnison Gun-nison ball park at 1:30. Manti and the Gunnison Gunners played an interesting in-teresting game, with the score ending 10 to 5 in favor of the Gunnison team. This was the first of the double header, and in the game played at Manti at four o'clock the latter took the honors, winning over Gunnison by a score of 10 to 9. All in all, the 158th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence In-dependence was fittingly observed, and the large crowd of visitors, together to-gether with the local citizens, were royally entertained. |
