The religious motto "In God We Trust" first appeared on the coins of the country in 1SG4. It was the result of the Increased religious fervor brought on by the Civil war. The then secretary of the treasury, S. P. Chase, received many appeals from people all over the country urging that the Deity be recognised on the American Amer-ican coins in a like manner as those of foreign nations. Secretary Chase wrote to the director direc-tor of the mint at Philadelphia, November No-vember 30, 1SC1, stating that "no nation na-tion can be strong except In the strength of God, or safe except in his drfense.
