Show Taxpayers Seek Salary Reductions More than seventy taxpayers of Sanpete county, with representatives from almost every community in attendance, at-tendance, met with the board of county coun-ty commissioners Monday at the courthouse at Manti and tugged and argued over the tentative budget which had been prepared by the commissioners. com-missioners. The session started early Monday morning and did not adjourn until nearly six the same evening. The county taxpayers association, headed by President Cox, was out in force and argued many reductions. Junius Metcalf, chairman of the Sanpete San-pete board of county commissioners, acted as general chairman of the meeting. The taxpayers insisted on many changes in the budget, and recommended recom-mended a ten per cent cut in the salaries of all county officers, both elective and appointive. Considerable argument was had on the adjustment of the road tax. The present rate is 1.8 mills, and after the matter had been discussed pro and con, and a citation ci-tation made as to the present financial finan-cial status, the taxpayers asked a reduction, re-duction, recommending that the levy for roads be 1.2 mills. Representatives from Gunnison, Centerfield, Axtell and other communities com-munities in the Gunnison Valley were in attendance at the budget hearing. |
