Show Pigs Made Appreciable Gains on Cooked Beans The Michigan agricultural experiment experi-ment station has found that the cooking cook-ing of cull beans improves their feeding feed-ing value for swine. The Ohio station found that feeding cooked soy beans saved 115.7 pounds feed per 100 pounds gain. . In a ration Including raw soy beans, pigs fed 30 weeks averaged 198 pounds weight' as compared with an average of 247 pounds for similar pigs fed a ration including cooked soy beans but limited to the same amount of total feed as was fed to pigs having hav-ing raw soy beans. Where pigs were allowed 0.71 pound cooked soy beans-daily beans-daily plus oth;r feeds to the limit of appetite, they were ready for market 84 days earlier than similar pigs fed raw soy beans. In these trials corn, ground alfalfa, and minerals were fed in addition to soy beans. Too many soy beans produce soft pork. The Illinois Illi-nois station tells us that a ration for fattening hogs should not contain over 12 per cent of soy beans. Hoard's Dairyman. |
