Governor Dern's message, in full, is as follows: "Proclamation of the armistice and cessation of hostilities between the contending forces, on November 11, 1918, brought to a close the world war, the greatest conflict in the history his-tory of the nations of the earth. All of the governments involved had suffered suf-fered heavy economic losses in the destruction of lives , and property. Some had become bankrupt. Thousands Thous-ands of Utahns were engaged in that struggle; many paid the supreme sac- ' rif'ce. The fate of civilization seemed trembling in the balance when the guns were silenced and peace was restored. "Tuesday, November 11, 1930, will be the twelfth annviersary : of the signing of the armistice. It is particularly particu-larly fitting, therefore, that the people, peo-ple, of this state should pause on that date to honor the heroes, both living and dead; to consider means of advancing ad-vancing the cause . of peace, and to ponder whether we are faithfully striving for the realization of the ideals which inspired America to enlist, en-list, her entire resources of men and money in that tremendous conflict. "Now, therefore, I, George H. Dern, governor of the state of Utah, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, November U, 1930, as Armistice day, and I especially es-pecially request that citizens of Utah, at 11 a. m. on that date, do cease from all labors and recreational activities activ-ities for the space of, two minutes; that they meditate in silence upon the blessings of peace and the . devastations devasta-tions of war. I further urge the display dis-play of the flag of the United States upon all public buildings and homes, and that proper exercises be held in schools and other places where either children or adults are congregated." |
