Show HAMSTRING HOME INDUSTRY. O.ie admirable thing about most European governments is toe zeal with which they look after their own interests and their own in-dust in-dust ics. U.icle S m's activity in looking after his own is not always al-ways so pronounced. During a recent debate in the British parliament it was poi.;te out that American moving pictures have a tremendous influence in promoting American trade. While the dominance of America, films was deplored by some speakers, it was admitted that the are used because of customer demand and tht the moral and t-e.. nical standards of American films were above those of films produ ed in continental countries. In France and Germany definite re . strictive legislation has been effected against American films o. economic grounds. While Euuropeans are taking pot shots at this (American indus try" there seems to be a disposition among some American politi; ians to go as far as possible in ham-stringing the big-scale America: producers of pictures. So there is considerable activity right at home, running parallel with this European attack, along the line of inteifeering with the internal affairs of the motion picture industry Leaders in this industry express a willingness to correct any abuse, which may have arisen, voluntarily, but the idea with the politician; who have a natural dislike for anything big is to pass some mor laws and regulations on the'subject. When will Americans begin to take a proper universal prids in the big things American business leaders are doing, and it will no longer be thought popular by politicians to "take a crack" at some industry which contributes to the natural- well being, boosts America through the world, and brings substantial revenue into Uncle Sam's strong box? |
