Show GETTING INTO A RUT. I. Owing to the growing tendency toward specialization in every department de-partment of "human activity, it is becoming be-coming more difficult for the average aver-age man to keep in touch with what is going on outside his own immediate interests. He becomes so engrossed with his special line of work that he runs a great risk of getting into a rut. While the exactions of modern business busi-ness and professinal life lead necessarily neces-sarily to a high degree of specializa-. specializa-. tion, they should not be permitted to unduly restrict one's mental horizon. Everyone should take sufficient time to keep abreast with important developments de-velopments in the world about him. By doing so he will often encounter ideas which will be of practical benefit bene-fit in his own sphere of effort. Above all, he should lay aside routine rou-tine duties frequently for the purpose of indulging' in systematic thinking. Many men are able to envolve their best ideas in some quiet spot away from the scene of their daily labors. Whatever may be the details of any method1 adopted, a portion of one's time should be devoted to sound reading covering varied subjects. Otherwise he will inevitably get into a rut. And getting into a rut is bad .; for his intellect and bad for his business. busi-ness. . |
