Show Scientists Would Save Totem Poles in Alaska Scientific treatment Is being given to the last totem poles still standing In the Indian villages along the coast of British Columbia and Alaska, so that these ancient emblems will be preserved, says the San Francisco Chronicle. Most of the hundred odd remaining totem poles known to be on their original sites are cleaned, oiled, painted and repaired so as to stand for many years. There are numerous small carved totems throughout the British Brit-ish Columbia and Alaska region, and these are being preserved by government govern-ment experts. Some of the tallest totems found have measured nearly 70 feet, the taJlest still In existence being at Jasper, Alberta, where it stands 65 feet high, with a base 9 feet underground. under-ground.
