Show ArtofHomemaking Stressed at U. of U.1 The training of young women in homemaking, in order that after graduation gra-duation they will be able to cope with any situation, whether it be in a field of scientific research or in the prac-i tical art of homemaking, is the aim j of the home economics department of the University of Utah, according to Dr. Rose H. Widstoe, head of the department. In order to realize this aim, the i girls are taught, during their first j two years, the fundamentals of the art of making a home and maintaining maintain-ing it in a correct manner. The students in. the home economics econom-ics department of the university are given one of the most thorough courses and comprehensive training in the art of homemaking in the p United States. The courses that are generally required re-quired during the first two years include: in-clude: A study of foods and nutrition, nutri-tion, wherein the girls are taught the scientific principles of cooking; the preparing and serving of balanced Weals; the most intelligent means of buying food, for economy and food value; the application and understanding un-derstanding of federal and state pure food laws; the choosing of the best food for the least cost for the right People at the right time. As the girl advances in her home-Waking, home-Waking, her course is altered to the following: The care and feeding of infants (in this course the student has a chance to experiment with growing children in the nursery laboratory); lab-oratory); the study of vitamins and how they apply to the growing child; the care, use, construction and designing de-signing of fabrics for home and personal per-sonal use. In her upper division work, or after af-ter her'? two-year .preparatory, the student may choose any of the above to specialize in if she desires. All in an (.g now studying v ome economics receives a training that will fit her in a specialized vocation, vo-cation, or educate her so that "she be able to make a home and Maintain it in the highest possible standard, said Dr. Widstoe. |
