Show Sanpete Residents ! Plant Many Trees: Approximately GOO small forest; trees have been planted by Sanpete county farmers during the past three years, according to Paul M. Dunn, forester for-ester for the Utah extension sendee. The orders received to date for 1933 planting indicate that at least 880 more trees will be set out this year. These trees were planted in shelter-belts shelter-belts and woodlots throughout the county and were obtained from the ' forest nursery maintained at. the-State the-State Agricultural college for thej purpose of furnishing trees for farm planting at a low cost. Most of the trees planted were of the hardwood variety and according to reports are growing quite successfully. Persons who have planted trees are: Christian Sorenson of Spring City, Mrs. Elizabeth Frandsen of Gunnison, Gunni-son, the Sanpete experiment farm at! Ephraim, Art Frandsen of Mt. Pleasant, Pleas-ant, L. G. Anderson of Manti, and Frank Whitlock of "layfield. Others ordering trees for this year are: Wm. Millar of Mt. Pleasant, Leroy Peter-1 son and Sanpete experiment farm at Ephraim; M. E. Christensen of Spring City, P. C. Madsen of Manti, and F. T. Tilton of Gunnison. The kinds of trees recommended for j most places in the county are the green ash, Russian olive, Siberian' elm, black locust, honey locust, and; golden willow for the hardwoods. Fori the conifers, where they can be protected pro-tected from the sun and be given water wa-ter until early fall, the Scotch pine, ponderosa pine, Austrian pine, blue spruce and the arborvitae wall do well. For most farm conditions, results indicate in-dicate that the hardwoods will prove to be thriftier growing and more useful use-ful than the conifers. Small trees of the suggested kinds may be obtained from the nursery at the college at prices averaging about $2 per hundred trees. The sizes vary from four to eight inches for the conifers and from 10 to 24 inches for the hardwoods. More than 21,000 ! , trees have been sold to date, but orders or-ders will be received until after April 15. Order blanks or other particular information may be obtained! by writ- , ing to the Utah Extension Service at ' Logan. |
