Show ! I Local Boy Scouts Attend Jamboree . Troop 36, Gunnison Boy Scouts of America, captured second place in the contests at the annual "jamboree" held at Moroni last Saturday afternoon, after-noon, when the scouts of the Sanpete division of the Bryce Canyon council gathered for a big time. Manti, represented repre-sented by troop 38, - won first place by capturing the largest number of points in the contests. Moroni was ready with "open arms" for the reception of the young Americans, Am-ericans, and the eleven troops, comprising com-prising 150 boy scouts, enjoyed, the festivities to the limit. The contests during the early afternoon, an hour of "funfest" and the court of honor held during the evening, comprised some of the highlights of the jamboree. jam-boree. A brief welcome ceremony opened the activities. Ellis Draper, scout commissioner for Moroni, gave a hearty welcome to the visiting scouts and outlined the program for the afternoon. af-ternoon. In behalf of the visiting boy scouts, Darrell Gates, a star scout from Gunnison, gave the response. The contests that followed were held on the green lawn surrounding the city hall at Moroni, an ideal place for the fun. First aid, 'fire building, rope spinning, signalling, cooking, relaying re-laying of messages, marching and! tent pitching, were some of the con-1 tests staged. Rivalry was keen and. good natured and some splendid demonstrations dem-onstrations were exhibited by the several sev-eral contesting troops. Following the contests, an hour of real fun and enjoyment en-joyment was put on as an extemporaneous extempor-aneous number, with Wm. Barton, scout executive of Ephraim, as master mas-ter of ceremonies. At eight o'clock Saturday evening, the scouts gathered around a huge bonfire and a court of honor was held, Darrell Rasmussen of Moroni conducting con-ducting this number. Darrell Gates of Gunnison, who had won five merit badges and being a Star scout, and McEwan Voorhees, also of Gunnison, a first class scout, had honors conferred con-ferred upon them. Mayfield and Clarion Clar-ion were represented at the Moroni jamboree, but as neither organization had been registered, they were not eligible for activities. Attending from Gunnison were Charles Rasmussen, commissioner, and ten boy scouts. Nolan Edwards and Richard Gledhill were also among those going from Gunnison. They acted act-ed as judges in many of the contests. |
