Show Will Hays and His Hollywood Troubles WASHINGTON' scribes apok-ing apok-ing fun at poor Will Hays ! -Washington, which has known him so well ; Washington Wash-ington whose stolid pulse has never failed to flutter at some new achievement of this boy Napoleon from Sullivan, Ind., feels deeply for Will in his new hour of-trial. That he will come through it all right, no one who knows the eternal spring of optimism which bubbles from his radiant soul can ever doubt. It seems a long time since Will Hays was in the cabinet, since he sat in the tower-like building of the Post Office department on Pennsylvania avenue and emitted daily machine gun statements cf all that was being accomplished. ac-complished. Will started in to build up the morale of the post ollice employees. The country was kept posted daily on the uplift, and so great was the admiration admira-tion of the country that the moving picture magnates came along and offered of-fered Mr. Hays the job of improving not the morale but the morals of the movies. It seemed a pleasing prospect pros-pect at the time. The salary was a whale and the title was to be that ni "tzar." apoleon had been only an emperor. Will was to be a czar I It was a golden opportunity. But Will recked not of Hollywood. It seems that Hollywood was just about ready to erupi when Will took the helm. Maybe the movie magnates knew this and wanted a czar to bear the brunt of it all. In tiny event, Hollywood blew off with a loud bang. Several times Will has been there to fix things up, and always every one promised to be good, oh, so good in thf future. Yet Will can hardly set foo. on Broadway until the patter of bullets bul-lets conies flying over the great open spaces from out there where men are men and women are women and chauffeurs chauf-feurs are shooters, and everything seems to go wrong. Once more Will is winging his way to the bad lands, and this time he says he is going to clamp the lid down and rivet it on for good. Before long the czar will be dwell ing once more on the beauties of lif in the movie colony, the chaste atmosphere at-mosphere of the entire place, the re linements of language, the elegance of manners, the delicacies of feeling and above all the great true throb, bing love which pervades all and makes all things pure and sweet and wholesome. |
