Show Handcart Pioneer Called at Mayfield Mary Ann Whitlock, a highly respected re-spected woman of Mayfield, answered answer-ed the final summons at her home Thursday of last week and in her death a long suffering was ended. Mrs. Whitlock had been an invalid for nearly eight years and some three weeks ago her malady became aggravated and she gradually sank. When 'the end came many of her children were at the bedside. . In the passing of the well known woman another of the handcart pioneers pio-neers has been called. Mrs. Whitlock Whit-lock was born in Denmark March 12, 1859, and when four years of age came to America with her parents. After a short residence in the east the family started on the long westward journey, traveling with a handcart company of Mormon emigrants. emi-grants. When Utah was reached the family settled at Ephraim, and it was there that she met and married George A. Whitlock. Later Mr. and Mrs. 'Whitlock moved to Mayfield and had resided there since. To the union were born thirteen children, among them being two sets of twins. Nine are left as survivors, six sons and three daughters. The sons are Frank, Hyrum and Alma of May-field, May-field, and Andrew, of Worland, Wyoming, Wy-oming, and Rulon, of Bingham. The surviving daughters are Mrs. Rose Roselund and Eva Whitlock of May-field, May-field, and Mrs. Virginia- Gribble of Gunnison. Mrs. Whitlock was an ardent member mem-ber of the Mormon church. She joined join-ed when but a young girl and was ever active in the auxiliary organizations.' organiz-ations.' For forty-eight years she sang in the choirs. She had the distinction dis-tinction of being the first Primary stake, aid in the South Sanpete district dis-trict and for eighteen years she was active in Primary teaching. : Solemn and impressive funeral services, were held rat the high school auditorium at Mayfield last Sunday afternoon at one o'clock. Services were under the direction of Bishop Clyde Whitlock, and the speakers were Hyrum Olsen, Parley Christiansen Chris-tiansen and A. C. Anderson. A special spe-cial musical program was given, Merrill ' Whitlock rendering a solo, while the selected choir gave several numbers. Many beautiful floral offerings were made, showing the esteem and respect for the loved one who" had been called to the other side. Among those attending . the services ser-vices from here were Mr. and Mrs. Marsden Gribble, W. H. Gribble, Dr. S. S. Kunz, Niel Sorenson, J. M. Knighton and Elmer Nielson. |
