Show Lion Club Members Hear ! Capitol Reef Boosted j , Joe Hickman, representative at the last legislature from Wayne county and who fought vigorously for the ' reinstatement of the . Gunnisjm-iLe-' van highway as a state road, was the special guest at the Gunnison Lions club luncheon last evening. Mr. Hickman is boosting for Southern Utah's scenic wonderland and more especially "Capitol Reef" a new scenic scen-ic wonder being exploited in Wayne county. The visitor gave the members mem-bers of the Lions club a splendid talk last evening and explained the plans of the citizens to put forward as an attraction the wonders to the tourists. tour-ists. "Bryce canyon rightly belongs on this side of the range," said Mr. Hickman, ''but influences are being exercised whereby travel goes to Cedar, City, is routed to Bryce canyon can-yon and in order to continue south j the traveler is forced to retrace their steps. We must all, if we would enjoy the benefits of the travel, tra-vel, get together and open attractions attrac-tions on "this side" and see to it that other railroads and interests do not take it from us. Representative Crampton, of the national na-tional house of .representatives, on a recent visit to Capitol Reef, declared '. that there were two outstanding features fea-tures in Southern Utah Bryce Canyon Can-yon and Capitol Gorge. The colorings color-ings at Capitol Reef are similar -to those at Bryce canyon and the scenic beauty spot in Wayne county has flowing streams, filled with fish and l altogether, when properly advertised will prove one of the big attractions for the travelers who are see'king real scenic beauty." Mr. Hickman urged the club to get back of the movement and aid in ad- . vertising the new park which is to Se " opened. He also extended an invitation in-vitation for the club members to visit Wayne county's wonderland and to be the guests of the citizens there. The invitation was accepted and some time in July a big caravan of Gunnison boosters will trek to the newly opened wonderland. Preceding the address by Mr. Hickman, Hick-man, President C. M. President Edwards, in his address . urged the several committeemen to "get busy" and put over the work that will be alloted to them. He also outlined the several major projects that had been started and finished : with satisfaction. More interest and true Lionism was insisted upon by President Edwards, and thisv done the Gunnison club can justly boast of one of the most active in the entire district. The club, upon the solicitation of members of the Gunnison Farm Bureau, Bu-reau, will aid in the Fourth of Juiy i celebration to be held in this city, and E. L. Swalberg, Niel Sorenson jand H. W. Cherry were named as a committee to assist. i j Miss Hazel Anderson, assisted by Miss Aphilda Anderson, as accompanist, accompan-ist, gave a musical reading, "Don't be What You Aint, and Miss Eunice Gremsgard, delighted the club members mem-bers with a reading, "In the Pantry." Both numbers were warmly applauded applaud-ed and encores were responded to by other numbers. The entertainmnC features of the clup will pe increased and during July F. A. Beck and Dr. Hagan will supply the numbers. The membership of the club has now reached a total of 33 and the work during the summer is to be continued with more vim than ever before. v |
