Show GOVERNMENT TO AID COOPERATIVE MARKETING A great deal of interest is being manifested here in the administration's adminis-tration's reported plan for assisting agriculture. Although in many parts of the country the farmer is said to be much better off than a year ago, the administration is desirous of doing what it can to facili- j tate his recovery. I The efforts of the administration, it is said, will be directed to a great extent in encouraging the cooperative movements for the hand-1 ling of farm products and it is said that a definite plan is being pre-! pared and will be suggested to Congress by the President. Secretary j of Agriculture Jardine, is of course, cooperating in the formation-of j the plan. j It is said that the new plan proposes the creation of a strong di-1 vision of cooperative marketing under the Department of Agriculture, j This division will not have actual regulatory powers and wilL not actj as a licensing byreau. It will direct its efforts toward helping the co-1 operative plan wherever practicable. j Economists estimate that two and a half million farmers are now marketing their wares through a cooperative agency and it is estimated estimat-ed that the total value of the products to be marketed by these farmers farm-ers this year will approximate two and a half billion dollars. The administration, it is said, believes that a great deal of good can be done for the farmer by assisting in this movement through a division of the Department of Agriculture. |
