Show Armistice Day Is Fittingly Observed Armistice Day was fittingly celebrated in the schools of Gunnison yesterday with appropriate and pat- riotic exercises. Programs were given at the Gunnison Valley high school and at the Lincoln school at Center-field Center-field and throughout both were highly high-ly pleasing and those present were deeply impressed with sentiment given giv-en as a commemoration of the closing of the great world war, November 11, 1918 just seven years ago. The program at the Gunnison Valley Val-ley high school was opened when the students and visitors bowed their heads and with folded arms paid a two-minute tribute to those who lost their lives in the world war. Following Follow-ing this impressiveS number all joined join-ed in singing "America," and Stephen Covey then offered a prayer. A duet by Mrs. J. E. Metcalf and James Tas-sie Tas-sie was splendidly rendered and well received. Dr. S. S. Kunz, a recent arrival in Gunnison, and who was on the front lines in France when the Armistice was sie-ned. gave a SDlendid and in- teresting talk of the world war as he saw it and of the experiences' and in closing he paid a high tribute to the boys who gave their lives that the nation might enjoy peace and happiness. happi-ness. Other interesting numbers furnished fur-nished were a reading by Mrs. Leslie Kidman, a piano duet by Misses Al-philda Al-philda Ande'rson and Noel Gribble, and a reading by Mrs. Stephen Covey. The exercises were closed when all joined in singing ''Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean." The exercises at the Lincoln school at Centerfield, were also deeply impressive im-pressive when a program, filled with patriotism, was carried out by the students. Promptly at 11 o'clock all joined in paying allegiance to the flag which was floating majestically over the school building. Dan Beck, who served over-seas during the struggle, was the principal speaker. Mr. Beck gave a graphic description of his experiences ex-periences and what Armistice day meant to the soldiers who were "over there." He also instilled into the hearts of his listeners the importance of the love and respect for the flag and urged all to pay it the proper respect re-spect at all times. In addition to the talk by Mr. Beck, a program, lasting some forty minutes was given by the students of the four grammar grades and throughout the spirit of patriotism was manifest. |
