Show TAXATION" VERSUS ROBBERY. The time has come for economy in public affairs, by legislatures and Congress, by state and local government govern-ment and taxation instead of robbery. rob-bery. The excess-profits tax and surtaxes and supertaxes are one of the prime causes of the high cost of living as they are all passed, on to consumers. Thesy taxes were designed to do-rive do-rive revenues from war profits whicjh no longer exist, and now these tax.es are excuses for doubling costs to tie final purchaser. A very light gross sales tax would not hit the consumer half as hard as the present system that increases from hand to hand. Now in order to get four or five billions needed to carry on the government gov-ernment with its wartime obligations we mulct the consumer of twice that sum. i A small, simple, very direct tax on retail sales would cut out all the tax pyramiding and the tax could not be shunted on some one else. We are all consumers and prefer taxation to robbery. |
