Show LET THE PEOPLE KNOW. Very much has been said during tin past several weeks ny thii papers in Salt Lake to the effect, that the taxpayers have been organizing and putting different departments of the state government, on the carpet to find out just exactly where their money is going. More especially is this true in the disposition - f the school money. It has lieen discovered that in one school district in the state it costs from forty to fifty dollars for each child who attended school, while in another school district it cost from $S() to $!)() and the taxpayers want to know. Kight, here in our own county the taxes for maintaining the schools are paid regularly. How much does it cost per child to maintain the schools? The taxpayers are in the dark for the simple reason there has never been a statement published pub-lished showing the disposition of the people's money for tin maintenance of the schools. livery taxpayer litis the right to know for what and how his money is being spent, and it is up to the school board to give them a comprehensive report and one. that the people can understand. No honest official would object to a published statement. Kvery state surrounding Utah has a law where county commissioners' proceedings must be published in full, showins.1 the expenditures for the month with the mimes of the persons receiving the money and'for what, and also the amount. In Utah the Supreme Court has held that it is compulsory foi school boards to publish annual statements of their transactions. trans-actions. The. statements must show in detail the money paid out, to whom, and for what paid. In justice to the taxpayers of Sanpete county and that al may know, just what is being done with the money they pa or maintaining the schools, it is well that the county board prepare a statement and have it published, thereby complying with the law. |
